HIDELAND.cnx is a small rooftop bar on top of a low-rise building on Chang Moi Road, just east of Chiang Mai's Old City moat. Finding it is part of the fun: the way in is through the back of a townhouse off the main road, and it is easy to walk straight past.

Up top, the terrace is simple and relaxed, with a wooden izakaya-style bar under paper lanterns and plain tables along a concrete parapet. The view runs over the low tiled roofs of the city to the hills on the horizon, and it is at its best at golden hour. The drinks list covers cocktails and Thai favourites, and the kitchen turns out Japanese izakaya snacks such as yakitori, plus steaks and its own fusion dishes, all at friendly prices.

It opens daily from 5pm to 11.30pm. Dress is casual and it suits a cheap date or a sundowner before dinner in the Old City; arrive early for a table on the rail.
