Rock Bar at AYANA Resort, built into the limestone cliff above the Indian Ocean in Jimbaran, Bali

Editor's Pick

Rock Bar, AYANA Resort, Jimbaran — Bali has better cocktails elsewhere and cheaper sunsets almost everywhere, but nothing else like this: a bar built onto a limestone outcrop above the Indian Ocean, reached by funicular, with the waves breaking beneath the tables. Reserve well ahead for the 4–7pm sunset window, or take a later slot for the night view.

Bali's rooftop bar scene is unlike anywhere else in South East Asia. While Jakarta goes vertical, Bali's elevated bars are defined by their relationship with the natural landscape — ocean-facing cliff bars carved into limestone above crashing waves, sunset sky lounges overlooking Seminyak Beach, and rooftop terraces perched above Ubud's jungle canopy. The island's most celebrated rooftop venues are concentrated around Seminyak, Kerobokan, and the Bukit Peninsula, where the dramatic terrain creates viewpoints that no skyscraper-top bar can replicate. Bali's rooftop scene is best experienced at sunset, when the sky over the Indian Ocean puts on a nightly show.
